End of an era for the Potters Arms

The end of January brought the curtain down on Richard Edwards' 13 years as landlord of the Potters Arms. Whilst there are plenty of villagers who remember pub life before Richard, for many of us, he was the only Potters proprietor we have known.

Richard achieved a great deal over those 13 years, not least surviving where many other pubs have failed. He launched the Potters comedy nights and the comedy festival for which the pub and the village have become known; he introduced regular quiz nights and hosted darts tournaments; he started a whole series of special events from curry nights to St George's Day singalongs and New Year's Eve karaoke; and of course, with Pete's help he took the pub private in a buyout from Brakspear.

In his time, Richard has been a great friend to Winchmore Hill and to the Residents' Association. He has donated beer and prizes to the annual Village Show, he has been a regular advertiser in the Village News, he has hosted our Community Lunches and laid on refreshments for villagers after the biannual litter picks as well as playing host to our regular committee meetings.

Above all, Richard ensured that the Potters Arms remained a village pub. It has been at the heart of our community whether for drinks on Christmas Day mornings or just a regular drinking and eating place for locals and visitors alike. Many of us can look back on events marking our or our children's special birthdays, wedding receptions and even the passing of a friend or relative. There are lots of great memories that we cherish and Richard was part of so many of them.

Of course, Richard is only moving down the road as he told us in his recent facebook video, but he will be missed and we wish him all the very best in whatever he does next. Richard will be replaced by a family with long experience of running Nepalese restaurants and we can all look forward to what they will bring to the village. Winchmore Hill used to have four pubs and now we are down to one (pending developments with the Plough). Our local contributes so much to our sense of community and provides an irreplaceable local amenity but it really is a case of use it or lose it. As a residents' association we really encourage everyone to get behind the pub and make sure it's next era is as prosperous as the previous ones.
