Remembrance in Winchmore Hill

Marking Remembrance Sunday is an important moment for many in the village. Winchmore Hill lost 18 of its young men in World War 1 and another 5 in World War 2. This is a huge number for such a small community but sadly it was mirrored across the country. Of course it was not only men who suffered. One villager who died not so long ago was married to one of those who didn't come back. She never remarried and remained single almost her entire adult life.

There was a respectful crowd of around 30 who came together to mark the occasion this year. Dave Short did a great job in leading us through the short service and we are also grateful to bugler Janice Young from Amersham Band for playing the Last Post.

The Memorial Hall keeps the memories of those who fought and died alive. It was paid for and built by villagers and opened in 1921, just a few short years after WW1 war ended. the Hall Committee have recently taken the Roll of Honour from the Chapel and had it restored and reframed. It will hang in the Hall hopefully for many years to come.
